Oh, wow. This is really, really striking. (It also reminds me a bit of the time I had a LARP character flay her own hand in a downtime scene... came out of it with a shiny new derangement and everything. Granted, she was a vampire, and at least fully expected to be able to heal herself.)
Personal stories aside, I love the sense of mood and madness -- only enhanced by the way you've done the background. Also hi, I'm browsing through your gallery (was surprised to learn that this character is/was an antiquarian, rather than a windwing!), commenting on your old stuff and generally being insanely jealous at the breadth of your talent. o___o
